Window 176 - West Rose - Last Judgment (restored, detail)

• Center: Christ enthroned in glory, displaying his wounds. Four beasts and angels surround him.
• First circle: Twelve apostles, with Abraham's bosom at 12 o'clock, and the judgment (weighing of souls) at 6 o'clock. Note the angel to the left and devil to the right.
• Outer circle: Starting from the 12:30 position, and proceeding clockwise (each circle on the right is paired with one on the left). (1, 12) Instruments of the passion; (2, 11) angels blow trumps; (3, 10) the resurrected dead awaiting judgment; (4,5,8,9) resurrection of the dead (naked, having just come from their graves); (6,7) hell (at the bottom of the circle, naturally enough).

NB: Read TOP to BOTTOM, unlike most windows. Some are modern (marked *).

• Row 12: (Bottom row): Blacksmiths as donors.
• Row 11: Samson carries gates of Gaza; Christ's body being annointed; David slays lion to protect sheep [some argue for Samson slaying lion, but sheep make me think likely David. On the other hand, the other side panels are often of the same characters, so I suppose a repeat of Sampson would fit that pattern. - GLS]
• Row 10: Elijah raises son of widow of Sareptha; Jacob blesses Ephraim and Manasseh; Elijah meets widow of Sareptha.
• Row 09: King David with pelican feeding young on her own blood.
• Row 08: Abraham takes Isaac to Mount Moriah for sacrifice; Descent from the Cross; Abraham is stopped from sacrificing Isaac.
• Row 07: Jonah near Ninevah (*).
• Row 06: Moses shows brass serpent; Adam collects blood at the foot of the cross (*); Israelites mark their doorposts with blood of the lamb (tau).

• Row 04: He waits at table.
• Row 05: He attends his dying Lord (note last rites); he is raised out of servitude.
• Row 06: Master dies; Julien is married.

• Row 08: Julien leads troops to war; Julien defeats enemy.
• Row 09: He speaks with a town's defender.
• Row 10: Julien cannot sleep; he leaves the battle field and goes home.

• Row 02: At Caesarea, Christ assigns Thomas to evangelize India.
• Row 03: Jesus introduces Thomas to Abbanes, envoy of Gundophorus--the King of India--who is seeking an architect; Thomas and Abbanes travel by ship to India.
• Row 04: (Left half moon) Thomas and Abbanes land in Andropolis, India; (upper quadrant of clover) At a wedding feast, the chief butler hits Thomas; (Right half moon) The butler goes out to get

Window 046 - Saint Thomas the Apostle in India (restored)

Bottom to top; left to right:

• Row 07: (Left half moon) Thomas gives money not used in church-building (see next) to the poor; (Right half moon) King returns and is not happy; he jails Thomas as prelude to his execution [story skips to row 9]
• Row 08: Angel shows the recently-deceased brother of the king the palace or mansion in heaven that Thomas is building for the king by building churches and feeding the poor [now to second panel of row 9].
• Row 09: Gad, brother to the king, dies and soul goes to heaven [back to row 8]; Gad is raised from the dead, and helps Thomas reconcile with his brother, the king.
• Row 10: Thomas teaches and baptizes the king.
• Row 11: (Half moons row) Thomas is later captured by King Mygdeus, stripped, and tortured; he throws the apostle into a furnace, which miraculously cools.
• Row 12: King Mygdeus commands Thomas to worship an idol in the temple of the Sun.
• Row 13: Thomas commands the demon being worsehipped via the idol to destroy its own temple; In retaliation, the priest of the Sun kills Thomas with a blow from a sword.
• Row 14: Thomas' body is gathered and buried.
• Row 15: People (pilrgrims?) look to the saint's tomb.
• Row 16: (Half moons row) Pilgrims at the shrine, where miracles of healing are done.
• Row 17: The near-obligatory angels with censers.

† Window 145 - North rose: Rose of France glorifying the Virgin (unrestored)

Virgin in center with Infant Jesus. Surrounded by four doves, four angels, and four Thrones. These are followed by twelve kings of Judah, Mary's ancestors. The outer ring contains twelve minor prophets.

The window was donated while Queen Blanche was regent of France (circa 1230). The arms of France alternating with Castile are seen below the rose itself. The entire ensemble is a none-too-subtle bit of royal propaganda, with Mary (the Queen of Heaven) at the center of it all. Note too that the figures below the rose in the lancets contrast a legitimate righteous sovereign with corrupt, foolish, or fallen ones. Blanche seems to have wanted no doubt about how she ought to be considered.

• Window 145C - North side, far left lancet: Melchizedek standing over Nebuchadnezzar (true king over the false Babylonian pretender to world-lordship, worshipping idol of his dream).

• Window 145B - North side, near left lancet: King David standing over King Saul (the chosen king over the apostate king rejected by God, who dies via suicide in despair).

• Window 145A - North side, central lancet: Saint Anne holding Infant Mary. Beneath this are the arms of France.

• Window 145D - North side, near right lancet: Solomon over Jeroboam, who worships golden calf (wise king over the fool who worshipped idols and abandoned the LORD).

• Window 145E - North side, far right lancet: Aaron above Pharoah, covered by the Red Sea (true priesthood and power over the false).

• Below: presentation at the temple
• Lintel: the Nativity story. (a) At the far left the Annunciation by the angel; (b) next Mary and Elizabeth meeting; (c) then the nativity: Joseph stands to the left, Mary lies on the altar-like bed, with the Infant Jesus on top; finally (d) at the far right, the angel brings glad tidings to the shepherds.

• First archivolt: Pisces (fish), Gemeni (twins), then 6 angels, Music (one of the seven liberal arts), Pythagorus (first defined mathematical relationship of harmonious tones).
• Second archivolt: Aristotle, Dialectic, Cicero, Rhetoric..obscured..then Astronomy, Ptolemy, Grammar, Priscian or Donatus.
