Zechariah speaks to us about the Restoration and gives us some interesting information on modern temple ordinances. He has much to say about the second coming and the last days.

This is a commentary on the books of Nahum, Habakkuk, and Zephaniah the texts for Lesson 49, “His Ways Are Everlasting” in the Come, Follow Me for Individuals and Families manual for 2022. I’m going to guess that these are not in the top ten of your favourite books to read on a rainy afternoon. They each have their charm and message though.

Nahum speaks of the horror of war, how to avoid it, and how to know if we will be among those who are spared its outcome. He addressed Assyria in his day, but we can easily see that he’s still speaking to us and asking us to sort ourselves out before events do it for us.

Habakkuk was a questioner. He was very unhappy with the way God was running things, and he had hard questions. God answered him. We learn that God does answer even the tough questions of life. You might have some of the same questions. Check it out.

Zephaniah had the heavy message of God’s day of wrath—Dies irae. In the lesson we can hear some music written about Zephaniah’s words and also try to figure out how to avoid the day of wrath. He advises us not be a do-nothing and not to be blind to what’s going on around us. Still good advice. pp.57

This is a commentary on the books of Jonah and Micah, the text for Lesson 48 in the Come, Follow Me for Individuals and Families manual 2022 on the Old Testament. We have one prophet’s story and another prophet’s teachings from their respective books in this lesson. The book of Jonah is about an individual’s responsibility for a nation, and the book of Micah is about a nation’s collective responsibility for the individuals in their nation. In both instances, a person was called by God to be a messenger or a prophet to warn, to encourage, and to mark out the covenant path to others by precept and by example. A question you might ponder is whether we need a Jonah or a Micah or both today.

Jonah is a well-known story, not so much because of Jonah’s teachings (of which there aren’t many—he had the shortest and most successful missionary discussion experience in history) but because of the fishy way he took on his calling. His story is relevant to us today because it shows what happens when our commitment to God wanes and our spiritual energies and conscience collapses down into the lesser realm of politics. There’s some of that going on in our culture both in and out of the Church.

Micah is less well-known and perhaps not often quoted—that’s undeserved. He had much to say that is still very relevant. The principal concerns the prophet Micah conveyed were social and economic justice more than the political justice concerns of Jonah. Jonah was called on a foreign mission. Micah was called to speak repentance at home, to give a warning to God’s covenant people, his brothers and sisters in Judah and Israel. God was worried about the society of Israel and Judah and how corrupt the people and their social structure had become. Corrupt judges were suborned and bought by the rich. Onerous taxation was placed on the poor to ruin them in order to seize their property. Unmerciful creditors pushed people into functional slavery. All these were prominent and commonplace features of Micah’s society. It was a society ripening in iniquity by grinding down the poor. If you find that we treat the poor well and that we live in an equitable and happy society, then you needn’t spend much time in Micah. Micah gave us part of the way to create a Zion society. He also told us where Jesus would be born. pp.48

This is a commentary on Amos and Obadiah—the text for Lesson 47 “Seek the Lord, and Ye Shall Live”.

Amos’ message set before the people the choice of the two ways: eternal life or death. He was likely the first of the prophets to have a book with the own name on it, although his book appears later in the minor prophets. He spoke about social justice and the importance of how we deal with the poor in our society. He noted the importance of that in a Zion society and showed how God could reject our outward religious worship of Him if we didn’t attend to those issues in our families and our society. He was also a pretty sarcastic and cutting guy at times. I wonder if he’d be banned from social media if he posted some of his comments today?

Obadiah is the shortest book in the Old Testament. He prophesied against Edom, a long-gone nation—or is it? Joseph Smith used Edom or Idumea when he was inspired to write the preface to the Doctrine and Covenants, the voice of warning for our dispensation. He wrote: And also the Lord shall have power over his saints, and shall reign in their midst, and shall come down in judgment upon Idumea, or the world (D&C 1:36).

With this as a key, we can take any prophecy or word about Idumea (Edom) and apply it to the worldly elements of the society in which we live. Thus, Obadiah writing 2,600 years ago about a remote and long-forgotten people is not irrelevant. That people of Edom might be parts of us—or at the very least, be types of the world in which we are immersed. We shall see what Obadiah had to say about them/us. pp.50

This is Lesson 46 “I Will Love Them Freely”. This is a commentary on the text in Hosea and Joel, the first two of the twelve minor prophets which we shall consider as we wind down the year’s study of the Old Testament. They are called minor prophets because their books were shorter than the major prophets like Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel. It doesn’t mean God liked them less or said less to them. They wrote sparingly (no wisecracks here).

In the Hebrew Bible these twelve books are called The Dozen and are on one scroll. These later prophets to the children of Israel were spread over three and half centuries—early 8th to late 5th BC. They aren’t presented in chronological order in our Bible, and we know very little about some of these prophets. For one of them (the last) we probably don’t really know his name. We can only make assumptions about them based on their subject matter, their writing styles and vocabulary, and try to match their message to various historical situations. Amos was probably the first of them and Malachi the last, but following the KJV order we will start with Hosea.

Their messages are not minor or incidental, but are very relevant to us even today. I hope to demonstrate that. We are not familiar with most of them, but their writings played a large role in the Restoration and significantly impacted the authors of the Book of Mormon (Nephi in particular) who had many of these writings on the brass plates with the exception of Malachi. However, Jesus later gave some of the text of Malachi to the Nephites—which is an indication of their importance. They are also quoted extensively by the New Testament writers. It’s worth making their acquaintance.

Hosea is a prophet who lived in scandal to demonstrate true love—his book is a tragic love story about the covenant of marriage that finishes with hope. Joel was a prophet who spoke out of times of ecological disasters and climate change—draw your own lines to our day. He drew those lines out to the signs of the times in our last dispensation. Some speculation, formerly only available in high priests quorums, is inserted here as well. pp.59

These first chapters of Daniel contain six hero stories of Daniel and his three Jewish friends who were in exile in Babylon at the time Lehi was leaving Jerusalem and moving through the desert. Lehi was leaving that world of the Levant and the military threat of Babylon behind to try to build Zion in a New World. Daniel and the others (Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and the remnant of Judah) were tasked with building an internal Zion in themselves and in their families while living in the midst of Babylon—that sounds a lot like our job. Like Daniel we are to live in Babylon, support the national government under which we live, be a positive influence for good, enlighten those around us by the light of the gospel, be of service to our secular society, and also serve and worship Christ—placing Him first as the foundation rock of our lives.

Daniel provides some indications on how we might do that. Interestingly the first story is an analogue of living the Word of Wisdom. Perhaps that’s also the first thing that the world might notice about us as a peculiar people living amongst them. pp.48

This is a commentary on Ezekiel the text for Lesson 44, “A New Spirit Will I Put Within You”, in the Come, Follow Me for Individuals and Families manual for 2022. This lesson focuses on chapters, 1-3; 33-34; 36-36; and 47—the assigned chapters.

We shall, of course, do those very seriously, but also wander a bit into a few other things that the manual judiciously skipped. Ezekiel was perhaps the oddest prophet in the Old Testament canon. It’s a very interesting read and hopefully the commentary will reflect that.

We will note that no Jewish scholar was to study Ezekiel until he was at least 30 years old. We shall have a look at prophetic visions, can prophets change temple ordinances?, repentance and grace, the role of a prophet (and why you don’t want the job), collective guilt, original sin, and personal responsibility, the resurrection, the Bible and the Book of Mormon as a unitary witness, temple worship, and how to understand and get more out of attending the temple. I have also appended an essay by Dr. Hugh Nibley on the Sticks of Judah and Joseph.

There’s also a new Home Evening game introduced that sure to be popular with no more than one or two members of the family. pp.66
