This is a commentary on John 1, the text for Lesson 3 in the Come, Follow Me for Individuals and Families manual for 2023. In John 1 we get John’s origin story for the Saviour which begins in the pre-mortal life and gives us a prologue to Jesus’ life that comes out of Genesis and Proverbs and Jewish traditions in the Mishnah.

John does not mention Joseph, Mary, the virgin birth, or Bethlehem or any of the other usual elements of our Christmas stories. He has no common elements with the other two origin stories. John goes on to speak of Jesus’ baptism and the witness given by John the Baptist and the early selection of disciples who will later become apostles. This early creation of the Church will mirror the days of creation in Genesis. It’s an interesting approach by John.  pp.21
